When I moved to the Bay Area over six years ago I connected with an incredible group of people, mostly women, who have turned into wonderful friends. We play together, share our wins and losses, and support each other however we can. So when one of those friends opened her new restaurant this month in Oakland, Mia and I sped across the Bay Bridge to enjoy all the deliciousness that is Gastropig, a new breakfast spot on Franklin Ave.
My friend Ann and her partner opened Gastropig with an eye toward simple ingredients combined to make the best of everyone's favorite meal, breakfast. Their menu is centered around hearty breakfast sandwiches in big portions at good prices, and if you're the type of person that gets a hankering for eggs and sausage at lunchtime, you are in luck, because Gastropig serves breakfast ALL DAY.
And let's talk about the breakfast: their flagship sandwich is the Bacon Slut (yes you read that correctly.) It's massive mouthful of applewood bacon, melted cheddar cheese and an over easy egg on a brioche roll. The bun gives it a burger vibe, and it even comes wrapped in paper like all the best burgers do. It was big enough for us to share (and then some)!
I'm definitely into bacon but sausage is really my thing, so the sausage biscuit was perfect for me. The options are pork or chicken sausage (I went for pork—spicy and so good) on a biscuit, this time with an over-easy egg and melted gouda.
Needless to say, with all this breakfast goodness going on we were stuffed by the end of our meal, but Ann sent us home with a special treat—the signature, PB, B & J: Peanut butter, bacon and jelly sandwich, on a pretzel roll. We cracked it open after nap time and it took a bit for Mia to wrap her mind around the combination, but she soon devoured it. If you're into breakfast sweets, this is your thing.
Gastropig's dining room is full is shiny metals and warm wood with plenty of room for dining in or taking to go, and the bacon theme dominates the walls as it does the menu (check out all the cute signs!). There's plenty of room to park a stroller or sit with a baby in tow. Oh, and they also have fresh squeezed OJ and really good coffee!
The menu will continue to evolve over time, with plans to eventually add some lunch options. Things are off to a great start with breakfast, so if you find yourself in the East Bay or want to take a special trip, make your way to Gastropig! Congratulations Ann!
